Slip-printed snooty bird
These are various experiments. All are printed on recently rolled out slabs, either Earthstone Original or Turning Earth’s studio reclaimed clay.
I screenprinted the bird image onto newsprint using black slip from Bath Potters over a year ago. The slip was slightly thickened with the addition of thick medium. Today I painted turquoise underglaze (I think Spectrum, but not 100% sure) fairly thickly over the bird (avoiding leg and eye) and allowed to dry. While it was drying, I rolled out a small slab of Earthstone Original stoneware clay. I then used a wide brush to brush All-Purpose Slip Over the bird. I then put a piece of clean newsprint over the whole slab and rolled it gently with a wooden roller.
Next I grated some coloured clay (like a giant chalk pastel) onto clean newsprint, using a plastic grid as a stencil, masked the centre of the slab with a strip of newsprint and then pressed it down onto the clay dust. Finally I used the wooden roller to embed the dust, then shaped the slab on a plaster hump mould.
